Gilded Glory

The use of gold in Gustav Klimt's paintings reminds me of ancient Byzantine panels. We are more used to seeing gold used in a decorative manner, and indeed Klimt's works have a slightly ornamental feel. I'm surprised by how versatile gold is in terms of its compatibility with other colours, as shown here. I've always liked the pairing of gold and white, but gold and black is a wonderfully exotic combination. Black really enhances the lustre of gold. I guess the Egyptians realized this long ago, wearing golden headdresses set against their raven hair.
